About
Gus's Diner pays homage to Costas "Gus" Stavredes, who immigrated to America from Greece in 1921 at the age of 20. After honing his skills in various restaurants and grocery stores to master both the business and the English language, Gus ventured to establish his own eatery in Richmond, VA. In June 1927, the Rainbow Inn opened its doors, swiftly becoming a beloved local spot renowned for its cold beer, signature homemade sandwiches, hearty meals, and Gus's trademark dry humor. For 48 years, Gus and his brother-in-law, Steve Linardos, nurtured the business until Gus's retirement in July 1975.
During his visits from North Carolina, Gus's youngest grandson, Kevin, often lent a hand, serving sodas and sandwiches to regulars. These experiences ignited Kevin's passion for hospitality and entrepreneurship. His affinity for Lake Gaston blossomed during college when fraternity brother Steve introduced him to its allure. Captivated by the "Lake Life" and vibrant community, Kevin and his wife frequented Steve's home there, eventually establishing their own retreat.
Years later, Kevin befriended Morris through their wives' connection. Morris, with extensive experience in the food service industry at prominent venues, shared Kevin's enthusiasm for Lake Gaston after a memorable trip with their spouses. United by their 60 years of collective expertise, Kevin and Morris embarked on a new venture: Gus's Diner. Morris and his wife also succumbed to the allure of Lake Gaston, purchasing a home nearby.
Today, ~100 years after Gus's original establishment, we proudly present Gus's Diner. Deeply embedded in the Gaston community, we are thrilled to serve cherished classics alongside innovative dishes crafted from scratch.
